Fortunately my 15 year old furnace made it through the polar vortex but died a couple of days later. During the vortex it kept my house at 70 degrees and due to the nest thermostat it showed it ran for 163/4 hours on the day it was -23.

The old furnace was an 80% efficient Payne with an output BTU rating of 135,000, now the new furnace is an American standard (also an 80% efficient) with and output of 125,000. Will this be enough to keep my house warm?

AS long as the windows and doors are closed tight. It should. The target is 66 on the coldest days so you should be fine.

Meaning 66 Btu per square foot of living space in a home insulated to current guidelines?

Well, doing the math my 2600 sq foot house would need a furnace of 171,000 BTU to keep it warm. 2600 X 66 = 171,000 As I stated above the 135,000 did fine during the polar vortex where the temperature was -23 (without the wind chill).

Is there somewhere with a national code where I can look up this information or does this need to be found locally?

Thanks

Google this..... how to calculate furnace size.
Top 5 on the display looked interesting.

Search this site. Look for posts by Punky.
IIRC..he explained it more than once.

Where about in Chicagoland do you reside?
There are a few big name locals, might give them a call.

To maintain 66 deg at least on coldest day.

I just wonder why the op is so vested in an answer AFTER they have already replaced the furnace.

Done deal, it's in and fitted.

Buyers remorse? Looking for an out against the hvac company?
