Everything was good in my 2002 Honda Civic LX sedan except the tires and front brakes. The mechanic said I have tread depth of 3/32 on the right front and rear tires and 4/32 on the left ones. He also recommended that I have the front brakes serviced since there was 2 mm pad thickness on the front left brake (I assume the other was okay or he would have mentioned it). I just wanted advice on where I should bring the car for brake service (dealership or a local mom & pop garage) and what would be the best deal (i.e. don't pay over $?) on tires since I will probably only keep the car another 2 years. My tire size is P185 70 R14.

Similar older car tire needs here. Went with Douglas All-Season from Wal-Mart. IIRC they were about $40 each.

On the brakes, assuming they have audible wear indicators, I'd leave 'em until they make noise. If no wear indicator, it's not too expensive to just put in new pads (no rotors). Check around for pricing on this. OFTEN dealers are less expensive, or have a special going. Loss leader for them to get you into the facility, then they upsell. DON'T let them upsell.

Thanks for the advice on the tires, CC. With so many tire places offering so many tires and so many prices, I get confused.

We've bought tires from WalMart for years. Pretty good deal. Free rotation and hazard repairs.

CC -
Your "only replace pads" recommendation sounds like a fine idea, given it's not obvious the short & long term cost to cut rotors may not balance against the minimal or no increased pad wear caused by not turning rotors

But I've always wondered if places will do just pads - or will they claim they have to do a whole workover due to claims of liability?

Anybody have much experience getting only pads done?

I second the motion - Have used Walmart / Sams for tires for years and had great products, good values, and good service.

Most places will do a "pad slap", after an inspection of rotors, calipers, wheel bearings.

Also... many rotors can't be turned because there just isn't enough meat on them. Mostly on smaller low-end cars.

A little. Some places refuse to not change the rotors, but unless they are worn beyond minimum thickness, and/or have excessively deep grooves in them and/or are warped (pulsating pedal), there is often no need. Especially on an older "beater". New pads will seat just fine on older scratched rotors.

As a related aside, I roll in new pads on my bikes on a regular basis.

Independent car repair places are more likely to do just a pad swap.

I routinely get 2-3 pad pairs per rotor set. Any place that won't do so, when the rotor condition is acceptable (thickness, wear state) looses my business.
