To avoid draining back our 24 ft. above ground pool over winter I put one of those block-off things in the skimmer opening, vacuumed all water from the skimmer, blew out the PVC return line and installed a gizmo device in the skimmer drain. I also put plenty of Teflon tape on the gizmo threads. However, when I checked yesterday, I found the block off was leaking and the skimmer had filled with water. Worse yet, the gizmo threads had leaked filling the return line with water. So obviously this ain't working too well! I'm wondering if there should be an "O-Ring" on the gizmo as ours didn't have one? Or would it be better to just use a PVC plug in the skimmer drain for a more positive seal and put a bicycle inner tube in the skimmer to prevent freezing? If I do that, I shouldn't even need the skimmer block-off thing. Any thoughts?

I had an inground pool in Northern VA - I plugged the skimmer bottom drain when I blew out the lines - and then put 3 one quart plastic bottles into the skimmer - so any ice expansion would squish the bottles and not crack the skimmer housing. Worked fine for the 7 years I owned the house.

Thanks for your response. So did you plug the skimmer opening in order to blow out the line and plug the drain? Our skimmer is probably too small for three plastic bottles but I think one should do the trick. Else, the bike inner tube.

On my pool, i actually had my blower blowing into the skimmer drain which pressurized the whole plumbing system - and plugged the pool water inlets one by one as they bubbled air, then plugged the skimmer drain. It worked for my pool design, but you will have to look at your plumbing layout to see what makes sense
