Hi All,

Oil burner hasn't started a couple of times in the past 2 weeks. Each time, pressing the red button made it start and things ran fine for several days, until today.

Service came today and replaced ignitor, and also said heat exchanger is cracked, so I should think about replacing right away.

How can I tell if the heat exchanger is cracked?

Thanks in advance.

Better have Co detectors if you are running with a cracked heat exchanger. That can force the poisones gas into your home.

I am not a HVAC guy.
NG forced air furnace.
Way before home CO detectors.

1 - All family members had flu like symptoms, nausea, that went away once you went outside.

2 - The guy stuck a flashlight in each tube, crack was visible.

In our case, R&R'ed the furnace.

HTH...play safe...notnew...

Thanks for replies.

We have forced air also.

Which tube? Is it the opening with the little trap door where you can see the fire? We only have 1.

Like I said...not a HVAC guy.
Fire gets sucked into the heat exchanger.
In our case, we had 4 tubes.
One of the middle tubes had a visible crack w/the light.

Im kinda surprised the guy did not show you the cracked part.

If he was not lying,
this is something I would not delay in getting repaired,
and/or stop using altogether.

How old is the unit?

A good tech will show you the crack, if there is one.

I used to be an HVAC tech.

I saw a furnace that had a crack all the way around the top of the combustion chamber. It could easily be seen when the burner was on. I showed the customer, who seemed to not be very interested. I removed my just-installed parts, informed the owner that it was dangerous, and that I wasn't going to be involved in a carbon monoxide poisoning. I left the home, and headed back to the shop. Before I had gone 2 miles, the shop called and wanted to know why I didn't fix the furnace. Customer had called and told the shop that I had it running, but decided not to fix it. The customer could have cared less about being killed, apparently.

I didn't go back and re-repair it, either.

HVAC person had me put my hand in front of the little trap door when open with the fan was on and I felt a slight breeze.

Unit is about 40 years old. Guess it's time to replace. Just trying to get it through the next couple of weeks until it gets warmer.

Thanks for replies.
