Reminds me of a great day we (three guys) spent at a lighthouse off Marathon Florida which was manned by the Coast Guard. We told the three or four on duty that we'd provide the lobster (we were diving near there) if they cooked them and provided the rest of the meal. They agreed'

We had a nice time. I remember one five pound lobster that was so tough you could not chew it, it was literally like chewing a piece of rubber. The others were good, don't compare with Maine lobster however.

I wound up using it for bait and caught several fish with a chunk of it that the fish couldn't get off the hook either, LOL.

The lighthouse we were at was about six miles off Marathon

I guess that lighthouse was replaced by this.

Edit: noticed the date 1858. I don't know if that's a manned lighthouse or not.

Wow, that's really interesting. Apparently that was a manned lighthouse and this incident occurred in 1959.

Quote:
Another fatal return trip to the lighthouse occurred in August of 1959. Seaman Willis Parker was making his way back to the lighthouse after having transported a special work crew back to Key West. Boatswain’s mate Furman Williamson, who was alone at the lighthouse, lowered the large block and hook to retrieve the launch from the water. When it was within reach, Parker grabbed the block, but before he could attach the hook to the boat’s line, a wave lifted the vessel up and away from the tower. Instinctively, Parker grabbed onto the block, which then swung back like a pendulum towards the tower ramming his head into a piling. Parker dropped to the water. Williamson quickly threw him a life ring, to which Parker was able to cling for a couple of moments before slipping below the waves. Again, the keeper aboard the tower could only watch in horror. The following day, Parker’s body was found by a member of the search party – his brother.

I think we were there in the summer of '58 or 59. It must have been the same lighthouse. There were certainly not two lighthouses off Marathon.

The Canadian Coast Guard has been busy lately divesting lighthouses.... I guess they feel they're useless antiques that are expensive to up-keep today. Sadly, our lighthouse at Cape Spencer is on the list of those they wish to sell off to local community groups.... Which simply don't exist here.

I fear these icons of Maritime life are going to be lost to history soon. It's sad.

Wish I had the resources to purchase and maintain "our" light.

One of the more famous ones in the U.S., Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

They made it a national park.

Maybe you could write a letter (email) to a Nova Scotia newspaper and suggest the same. Maybe someone or some group will pick up on it.

It would have been a shame to have that lighthouse destroyed, such a remarkable piece of history. That area known as "the graveyard of ships".

I narrowed the year down to 1959, it was easy to do since I was married in 1960 and the two guys I went with I worked with in Curtiss-Wright Tech Publications. I didn't work in that office in 1958 so it was 1959 and the plant closed for two weeks vacation in July.

That means we were there one month before that incident occurred and unless the guy was off duty, (they rotated something like a week or so on and 3 or 4 days off) that would mean he was one of the guys we had dinner with at the lighthouse.

It's really eerie to find this out 53 years after the fact.

Just in the news today. Hooray for private money!

South Haven South Pierhead Lighthouse

Quote:
The South Haven lighthouse is one of 124 lighthouses in Michigan and just one of four in the state that has a catwalk

---------------------

The lighthouse was built in 1903 and the lantern portion that contains the light is believed to have come from the original lighthouse that was built in 1872.

These groups usually do a great job. My wife a member of one and president of another in Florida.

That's why I suggested to Jason to write a letter or email to a Nova Scotia (or other) newspaper about his lighthouse, it just takes the right person to see it and start the ball rolling.

One of the projects she was involved with was the "Jomar" a personal railroad car of John and Mabel Ringling.

This car sat for years before they finally found someone who would take it and restore it, which is now being done. We got an email from a friend two days ago showing the progress.

It was going to be scrapped.
