Haven't been here in awhile, and hope I'm posting in the right forum.

Wooden side door won't close. I've had problems periodically and had to tighten the screws as the plates on the wall and door tend to loosen and door won't close otherwise.

Now the door won't close at all. I have a contractor coming but not till next week, and in the meantime, the only security is the lock on the screen door.

This happened a few decades ago; a neighbor sanded down the door and the locks have worked okay until recently, when the metal parts started working loose and slipping.

One of the contractors I called suggested checking the hinges. I can't even reach them; apparently they were painted over and all I can see is a center "post" with a round ball on top. There's nowhere to tighten the screws; I can't even find them.

Locksmiths have said this isn't a lock issue; it's a door issue. Door contractor can't come until next week.

In the meantime, is there anything I can do to try to get the door to shut? I brace it at night with items that would make a lot of noise crashing if someone tried to break in. But I also can't leave the house to go anywhere b/c I've found the key to the front door doesn't even fit. I've never used it as an exit door and didn't check the key until now.

Any suggestions? Consolations and pity will gratefully be accepted as well!

What is the issue?
The door won't close all the way because it is jamming? Is it jamming at the top, bottom, lock side?
The door closes but the locks don't latch or line up with the frame?

The hinges are easy to check with the door open lift on it and see if it moves or hinges wobble.

Thanks for the quick response.

The door won't close all the way b/c, it seems, the whole door might be swollen. It's really as if the door is larger, from top to bottom.

I can't get it closed enough for the bolt to even engage.

If I could get it to close all the way, I don't know for sure but suspect that the bolt would line up and close.

I'm going to check the door for wobble and will post back.

Thanks again.

BTW, is that a Lancaster in your avatar? At first I thought it was one of the Fortresses but the tail assembly doesn't match that of the Fortresses, but it does match the Lancaster.

(I love those bombers!)

If your weather is like ours, the door is probably swollen from the humidity, and not being sealed on all 6 sides. But you guys are already into snow, so humidity should not be an issue. Look at the jamb around the door, scuffed paint will tell you where it is jamming. Trim the door as needed, with a plane or sander, in that area, then seal with paint.

Yes, that is the Canadian Warplane Heritage Lancaster out of Hamilton Ontario flying over my house.

Can you post some pics?
Here is how.... ---> Link

Im a bit confused. In one paragraph you say you can tighten the screws, and in another you say they can't be found. Did you recently paint the door and/or door jamb?

You say "wooden door". Not sure of the terminology...
Are the rails and styles, is the door, coming apart?

HTH...good luck...notnew....
