Thanks.

If it's any help, I set both the refrigerator and freezer settings to the lowest they can go, but it didn't make the sound stop.

I spoke with a local electrical contractor who also sells a limited stock of appliances. From my description of the problem, he theorized that it's a problem with something the controls the defrost cycle. Recommended that I shut it off for a day, the turn it back on and see what happens. Unfortunately, he said they only service Whirlpool appliances.

Amana was owned by Maytag when Whirlpool bought Maytag....so Whirlpool owns Amana and makes it.

The only thing I don't want to see happen is the symptoms disappear from a manual defrosting before it is checked....JMO!

Had a tech for a service call. He replaced what he called a "jazz board". That was 3 hours ago. Fridge is still running.

Jazz board is what turns on the refrigerator and the defrost system. It is a common part...

Refrigerator electronic (JAZZ) control board

Did they say what the noise was?

He did mention the condenser and a fan that would make noise. Tech talk is lost on me, though. I checked this morning and the fridge wasn't making any sounds. I opened it and felt a shelf and it seemed cold enough. Problem solved for now. Just wondering of the jazz board going bad on a unit only 6 years old is common?

The jazz board on my 5 year old Whirlpool fridge failed last year. The appliance guy told me that one contributor to their failing is putting hot food into the fridge. Seems the moisture that evaporates off of the food causes problems with the board. Since these boards are pretty pricey I've made sure to allow things to cool down beforehand.

Guessing the bowls of water in your fridge are also evaporating which could of contributed to your board failure.

Sulfur water in air also shortens life of fridge.

I have been told so does smoking in the house?

I was taught in Thermodynamics class never put hot in icebox or very cold or frozen in oven.
