I brought my 2012 Camry in for a wheel bearing replacement. The dealer called and said the back plate bent or warped when being pulled by the machine they use. They spent hours trying to straighten it but can't. They claim rust caused this. They claim the plate costs $375, but they will split the charge.
Does this make sense or did they screw the job up and are making me pay more for it? I live in New England so I understand some rust.

Any comment will be appreciated. I am not sure what choice I have now. They have the car.

Nope, he's being honest with you.......

Those bearing/backing plate sections collect rust
and some are almost impossible to get apart without
superhuman force.

The space is very small between the bearing and plate,
and even brand new ones are touchy to get together.

When together, there can't be any play (space) that would
allow the bearing to 'flop' in the space.

He's doing you a favor splitting the cost smile

BTW, New England or not, even SOME rust will bind
up that space.......If you still have the time,
tell him to grease the mating surfaces (for next time) wink

"tell him to grease the mating surfaces "....

I understand, its at a dealer vs. DIY.
I also know, I have zero clue of this car and the problem.

Would anti-seize be a better option?

Curious...Thanks...notnew...

Anti-seize would be "Another" option,

anything that prevents the two surfaces
from rusting together is gonna help.

But because of the location and prevalence for
water spray, dirt, etc., it's just gonna happen.

Difficulty in separating the wheel bearing cost me an extra couple hundred on my last one to go bad on the 'roo. Luckily, they didn't end up having to replace any more, just spent time bangin' on it...
