This is what I came up with to repair the excessive gap at the front of the tang. Small piece of wood glued to the side of the cut. There will be another one on the other side as well. The problem of how to clamp such a small piece I solved, hopefully, by placing a wedge(screwdriver) in between the repair piece and a backer on the other side of the cut.

So what you are doing here, is playing a game of "You Bet Your Ash."

Nice stuff, ash, I built a car out it. Hard, but workable. You already have a bundle in the stock, measure MANY times, cut once!!!! I would wonder that magic marker would soak in to some degree requiring excessive sanding. Lamp black should not do that. Scribe with a utility knife, then rub lamp black into the cut, finish short of the line.

I pretty much stopped work to regroup and repair, as best I am able, the glaring mistakes made inletting the tang. I made and glued an insert to fill the cut and I also cleaned up the red and blue careless marking. I then masked off the area to keep it from happening again with the inletting black. The cut at the rear of the tang is about 1/8" too long. This I figure to cure by have the end of the tang welded then I'll shape it to be about 1/8" longer.
I have also ordered a couple new chisels, Narex.
This is a lot more difficult than I figured, but I'm fine with that. I don't want to "move on" until I get these glitches "fixed".

Not bad at all, methinks. Pretty clean match at the end-grain.

Most of it will be removed for the tang, but I still wanted it as best I could get it.
