Craftsman Briggs and Stratton 540cc 21 HP engine in riding mower. The oil and filter have been changed every year. Is 7 years old has never used any oil and has run like a Swiss watch. Suddenly started smoking and smells like burned oil. Any thoughts about problems and solutions?
Thanks in advance

Dirty air filter?

Increased vacuum on the "clean side" of the filter drawing crankcase fumes in via vent hose?

The air filter was dirty and I changed it. However, after the engine warms up it still smokes. Not good but what else should I consider??

The oil level is checked before each start but is slightly lower now. I ran the engine for about 10 minutes after putting in the new air filter to make sure the smoking was not from and residual oil. The oil does not smell of gasoline.

The oil level remains up but the smoking continues. Is this a ring or gasket issue? How expensive is it to fix the engine? New engines are in the $5-600 range.

Just idle curiosity, what weight oil are you using? Is it the same as what you've used in the past? What is called for? WHEN was the oil changed last?

I have been using 5/30 synthetic. (a friend gave me a few quarts a couple of years ago and it does help it start in cold weather) I changed the oil and filter last fall. According to the Briggs and Stratton website this oil meets there spec.

On a largish briggs OHV engine, barring oil overfill/leaking carb, I'd first suspect the head gasket.

Replacement isn't difficult.
