Never had this problem before, but after some searching, found the bear population has been on the rise in NY.
My wife called work this a.m. and said on her way out to town, she noticed our large waste management garbage can tipped over in the side yard, and garbage strewn half way to our neighbors. Picked it up after work, not thinking too hard on it,because we have a couple large dogs in the neighborhood that get free now and then, and a raccoon or three.
Later this afternoon,my wife went out the back door to feed the birds, and found the large T shaped pole I had put up some years ago, with suet cages at the top,on the ground, snapped at ground level. It was made from heavy gauge conduit and would take a 200 man to snap like that. Later found one of the suet cages 100 feet back in the woods, still intact, because the animal couldn't open it.
The best part are the scratch/dig marks on the trees near where my wife spreads birdfood. It had climbed one of the larger bore trees(about 4")a good 12 to 15 feet, knocking small branches off on its way,and leaving 3 to 4" marks;at least a 1/4" wide and deep,of various lengths,up to 12".
Definitely way too large for a coon or cat of some sort, even a good sized one.
I know bears can't retract their claws. I saw no marks that would indicate one,but I'm not sure a cat would have the weight to knock that pole down.
Going to call a Ranger tomorrow and see if there have been any recent sightings around here.
This has got my wife more than a little upset. She really loves feeding the small critters and watching them. She knows she may not be able to now.

Yes probably a Bear. Cubs just came out of den. The males are chased off by mother bear.

They take off in search of food and mates.

Not unlike the teens at the mall. smile

I heard one was spotted in the area of the Twin Bridges.

How far are you from there?

Funny you should mention, as they say. My bird feeder "shepherd's-crook" is slightly bent this morning and the suet cage is gone. Has to be a bear. We've had them at least twice before in the past 10 years or so. Before the 5/8" mild steel rod was bent down to an almost 90 degree angle. I feel grateful it's only slightly bent this time. The only way to straighten it in the past, was to beat the heck out of it on an anvil. I can't bend it manually.

PESCADERO, Calif. --
Police say a mountain lion got into a home in California
and grabbed a small dog from a bedroom where a small child
was sleeping. According to San Mateo County sheriff's
deputies, a mountain lion snatched 15-pound Lenore off
her owner's bed at 3:30 a.m. Monday.

"Lenore did her attack barking, very vicious attack sound
that she does when she's not liking something," said
owner Vickie Fought. "And then she instantly was silent."

Fought says her dog was sleeping in a doggie bed. She and
her daughter, Catalina Peso, were also in bed when the
mountain lion slipped into the room through their
double doors.

"We had one open a few inches or so, I don't know,
maybe six or eight inches wide," Fought told KGO-TV.
"Just for some fresh air."

Fought says, at first, she thought the mountain lion was
their bigger dog Leo. Her daughter says she knew something
was wrong because of the smaller dog's bark.

"I knew it wasn't like Leo, because it wasn't
her normal bark," Peso said. "Because she plays with
him a lot and it didn't seem normal."

Its a big problem up Old Forge way. Tourists and summer residents think is good to feed them. Its not. Bird feeders or food left on in a house with screen door are a particular problem. Once a bear, or even a cub, enters a home itself, it will be shot by the homeowner or John Law.
Bottom line: A fed bear is a dead bear.
I have no use for the way Disney humanized so many wild animals. It gets people injured or killed.
