#9030 - 08/13/01 04:59 PM Oil furnace transformer failure

I have a New Yorker oil fired furnace - Burner is a Wayne/Blue Angel. My problem is that the transformers keep failing. This is such an on-going problem that I always have one bought as a spare so that we don't get "caught in the cold" on some cold Maine winter night. My regular service man that installed the furnace and the intial transformer replacement dosen't have a clue why they keep failing. We both would like to know if you could shed some light on this.

It is difficult to miswire an ignition transformer, they are generally center grounded and as long as they are not dented and mistreated, they last a long time. Ignitors in poor condition may cause exccessive amperage to flow, so check the ignitors - or just replace them with brand new ones in proper distances.

Overheating ttransformers can cause them to shift wires, short and fail, so look for overheating from flame burning back into the burner body. Wayne burners are often used for high pressure chamber conditions, but they may not survive excessive back pressure. Chimney back pressure may exist under some wind conditions, so look there with instruments. It is possible to mount the transformer off the burner, running ignition wires to the ignitors.
