I would love to use the star drive but right now I have square drive screws and I don't have an easy source for the star drive screws

Square drives are still a lot better than phillips screws. I'm surprised that square drive and star drive screws just started showing up fairly recently. Phillips screws are designed to strip out, which is a good thing for certain applications, such as production where screws are driven with a driver that is continuously powered, such as drywall installation.

Even with square or star screws certain ones may be lower quality, and any coating may clog up in the recessed opening making driving hard. That happened with a bad batch of deck screws.
