The other day we had an electrician put in a bathroom fan. He put a new switch for it over near the old outlet with the GFCI, now the plug doesn't work. The green light is on but nothing else. Until tonight. We have one of those disposable night lights and it was glowing slightly, not normal but for sure glowing and not from the green light. I plugged in something else and it didn't work and then plug the night light back in and it didn't work. Then plug it back in again and now back to glowing faintly. I don't want to call the electrician back because it will mean another half day off work and they might even charge me to come back because I can't prove they did it. So anybody know what is wrong so I can fix it myself?

I'd call the electrician and tell him that the GFCI doesn't work after his work was completed. Let him figure it out, I would guess it shouldn't take too long.

If you want to look into it, I'd start by taking the GFCI device out of the box and checking the connections both for tightness and proper location on the device. I'd make sure I had proper incoming line voltage and an intact neutral.

Good luck, be careful.

Bob.

Guess I will need to call, last night I woke up and the night light was glowing normal. Later when I turned off the new exhaust fan the night light turned itself off. I swear I can't do anything without repeat trips. Still can't take a shower in the new tile shower after three years and one time tearing out the pan. It is to the point now that I expect problems.

There may be a loose connection. I assume the light is a glow when on light. It may pass enough current to light the light that takes like 1/50 of a watt but will not support an actual load.

The problem is with the neutral wire. It could be cause by one or two things. Loose termination or the electrician is switching the neutral instead of the line feed (constant hot).

You can also check to verify that the line (feed)is connected to the proper side of the GFI.

Also note that some GFI outlets light when the outlet is working, while other manufacturers may light when in the tripped state. Check the reset button.
