I think of a quote from the president of Western Union in the late 19th century, when he was asked to purchase Alexander Graham Bell's phone patents.

Quote:

In fact, the technology was so radical that even the president
of Western Union, William Orton, had difficulty understanding
telephone's extraordinary possibility. When he was approached with
the option of buying Bell's patents for $100,000, he turned down the
opportunity to monopolize the entire electric communication industry
with the comment, "What use could this company make of an electric
toy."

The internet and web, as a widely used tool, isn't even 20 years old. I can't imagine the changes it will bring over the next few decades.

I enjoy this one as well;

Quote:
“My recommendation to the [patent] office is
that everything that CAN be invented HAS
been invented!”

The Commissioner of the United States Office
of Patents , 1899, recommendation to abolish his
office

And what a BAD time to make such a comment, just before the beginning of the 20th century, by far the most significant century in history as far as technological progress.

The next 20 years will probably top the last 100. With computers accelerating development.

The problem's plain to see, Too much technology,
Machines to save our lives, Machines de-humanize

I agree that the past 20 years, the computer and internet has created much.

But then you have the evil side, automated phone calls instead of a live person to talk to, people so attached to cell phones and tablets that they cannot even function without and Twitter in my mind is just another tool of narcissus because I really could care less about what someone in rambling about and I doubt one cares what I rant about.

As in everything, there needs to be a healthy balance. Watch a computer system go down in some business and people are just sitting there unable to do work.

And of course without the internet, most of the media dingbats that are out there talking, reporting, blogging, and posturing would not have a job.

The extent of my technology is the Internet. I can't afford the time or cash to go beyond that. One SIL always has to have the latest electronic gizmo. I wonder how many of them he has thrown away by now, and how much cash went with them.
