I have a 2004 Nissan Quest with 123,000 miles. Last Sunday (9 days ago) I changed the radio in the van with a refurbished, stock unit. After re-connecting the battery, the van would turn over but die after a couple seconds. But if you push the gas pedal, it runs and drives fines. At first there was no code but 5 days later, the code P0442 appears which is Evap Leak. Other than the starting issue, there are no drivability issues and gas mileage is normal.

I've cleared the code and checked the gas cap. The starting issues are now intermittent, sometimes it starts fine; other times you have to give it a little gas. The "Service Engine Soon" light came on Sunday but went off yesterday.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? My first guess is there may be an issue with either the gas cap seal or maybe the fuel pressure regulator.

thanks

I don't see any reason why the battery disconnect would
trigger anything with the evap system.....but?

a small evap leak will give you the code, without too many
related problems....
A LARGE leak will cause vacuum issues in the manifold,
and could trigger the stalling condition.

HOw does it idle (on a regular basis?)

Generally it idles about 800 rpm. When I have to step on the gas to get it started, it tends to idle a bit higher (1200 rpm).

This past weekend we drove to NJ which is about 3 hours away. No driveability issues. The Service engine soon light came on about 20-25 miles after we filled up with gas in Jersey. It went off the next day while we driving. I can't remember if I re-tightened the gas cap after the light came on.

NJ is a 'full service' state, so I suspect the attendant
might not have been too careful with the cap....

For $10 or so you can get a new cap and rule that out
and if continues to show an evap leak, you need to have
a 'smoke test' done to find the culprit leak.

Curious, after a code shows say for an evap leak and the culprit is the gas cap, doesnt the computer have to be reset to get rid of the code(service lite)

The light will generally self-extinguish if the condition is corrected, and remains corrected for a set number of "drives" (OBDII Drives, not neccessarily trips), typically 3. That is generally 3 drives where the engine starts cold, reaches full op temp and goes closed-loop for a given amount of time. The code would remain in the history until its erased or a given time expires.

We came back from NJ on Monday. I haven't had a chance to connect my code reader to read the code. But we did have at least 3 cold starts before the light went off.

I'll try a new gas cap this weekend.

SO far the code has not returned and no problems starting the van. I didn't replace the gas cap yet but I will keep an eye on it.
