Thanks to all for your help. I got pulled away from my computer yesterday and missed out on all your comments.

I've been told there's a place to get straw not far from here.

As to changing the thread title, 'Straw poll' is a good one. What the hay? Whatever works. cool

Seems to me there's also horse hay and cow hay?
My woman buys a lot of it, there are three horses to feed.
She always gets them big ol round bales, three on a trailer and 1 in the bed of the truck.

Personally I think the round ones should be illegal.
Horse can't get a "square meal" ya know!

"Seems to me there's also horse hay and cow hay?"....

Yep. It comes down to the amount of protein within the grass. Alfalfa is high in protein. Some horses, of which my wife has one, if they eat alfalfa hay can/does get founders. Founders is caused by the enzymes in the stomach which get to "hot", and they end up in the lower extremities. Makes it very difficult for them to walk or get around properly. Treatment is much more $'s and time consuming vs. buying the proper hay. We buy 130(+/-) of alfalfa hay for her other critters, as they need the protein. We try to never feed the alfalfa to the horse.

We don't get big square bales nor rounds cuz they are just to big/heavy to handle.

FWIW...notnew...

I grew up on a hay / straw farm. We had three size bales.

One Mexican bale. 50-60 lbs.

Three Mexican Bale 150- 200 lbs.

And a four foot square x eight foot long forklift bale. about 1000 lbs

My favorite bale toy.

Got a ticket in 1980 doing 75 mph in a rain storm with a bale wagon. My boss was the judge. grin
