I have been looking at the following bath vents and was wondering if anyone had a preference or not?

Panasonic

Broan

There was a Broan model that had an auto/on feature when it hit a certain humidity level but I read some complaints that it came on too early?

I've installed lots of Broan fans and have good luck with them. In my opinion, they never seem as quiet as their sone rating would indicate.

Seems like the Panasonics have a good reputation.

Best I can do. Let us know what you choose and how it works for you.

Bob.

Yeah, Broan and Nutone are the two I hear most about. The Panasonic one had allot of good reviews but I associate them with TV's and such.

I plan on installing it on a timer but would the humidity "auto on" type worth the extra cost? They don't do any good if you don't use them and I have a teenager and a wife who would forget crazy

Both good. Broan bought Nutone a number of years ago, so essentially the same products now. Avoid the bottom of the line. Better is usually quieter, as for size, figure about 1.5 CFM per sq ft of floor space. IE: 70 sq ft bathroom would need about 110CFM.

Bill, when you say both are good are you referring to Broan & Nutone or Broan & Panasonic?

The Broan models have a 6" duct opposed to a 4" one. I have to install a new roof mount vent exit so its not that big of a deal but are more vents going to the larger 6" type ducts?

What kind of fan is this. You said a bath vent??? I have never seen a bath vent with a 6" duct, unless maybe a thru-the-wall. They are almost always 4". Broan/Nutone, or Panasonic are all good fans, provided you avoid the cheapy bottom of the line type fan.

Bill, the link to the Broan I have above uses a 6" duct.

Yeah, extra noise helps out when you have company over! eek

Two years ago I had a Broan fan installed in my bath, and it had the 6" pipe. Now (and maybe then) you can get a higher performance, 2.5 sone, with a 4" pipe. My fan with the 6" pipe is pretty quiet and efficient, but that pipe is probably overkill. If I would have known, I would have gone with the 4". You end up with a bigger hood on the outside wall, or roof, and it's a little obnoxious. Bill

So I bought a Broan QTXE110 and was looking over the manual and it doesn't state if its mounted from the bath up through the hole or down from the attic?

The housing has a bent out lip like it could be pushed up through the hole but then I would need someone to hold it while I attached it.

Should I just cut the hole to match the actual opening of the box and then just set it on the drywall and then mount? I would then caulk around it to create a tight seal if I did it this way.
