The fan I am thinking about buying, has two chains. One for the speeds (high med & Low) the other one is for the light. I am not installing the light kit, only want the fan. It does not come with a remote. However, I would like to install a wall remote to control the 3 speeds. I do not want to install the add on remote, with the wireless control and the receiver in the fan housing. I want to control the speed of the fan with a hard wired wall remote. Is that possible or do I have to buy a fan designed for that application? As always, Thank You.

Interesting question, here's my thoughts.

Most ceiling fans have your typical 3 speed stepped motor. Those stepped speeds are accessed by the pull chain. So, it would seem to me that a fan rated speed control on the wall should work just fine if you can access the wiring that controls the speed setting of the fan.

If I recall correctly, you can accomplish this with any 3 speed fan by setting the fan to 'high' and using the wall switch to provide the adjustment.

Hopefully, someone with more experience will provide clarification.

Bob.

If you don't want to install an add on remote, and the fan does not have one, you are out of luck. I don't understand your choices, however. The add on type are fairly easy to install, receiver block goes in with the motor controls. Remote goes where you want it. A wall mount is usually included.

I agree, don't see why a wall mounted variable speed control would not work.

Done this many times, no known problems. Had to use a capacitor type fan control, however.

That's true, the speed control on the fan must be set to the highest position using the pull chain if the wall speed control switch is to work properly without damaging the fan. Detail Here

Ceiling fan and wall switch all installed. Happy to report all working fine. Fan controlled from the wall switch with high med and low works great. Thank You for all the help. Now on to the next project, I don't start any without checking with the forum and all the great help, from the members.

This type of fans are available in the market. You can take idea from there.

I found when I installed a variable fan control the fan hummed when you adjusted the speed. It was fairly annoying, more annoying than having the chains hang down from the cathedral ceiling mounted fan.

For our bedroom fan it rarely goes above the low setting, especially at night. With air conditioning the fan allows us to be comfortable with the AC set at 78-80 degrees even in humid NC since the AC keeps the humidity in check.
