Voters go to the polls here tomorrow and this is the hottest issue on the ballot by far. Tons of ads on radio and TV, signs along the road, ect. RALEIGH, N.C. — Political candidates and activists for and against a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage have 24 more hours to push voters to the polls for Tuesday's primaries.
The item on the ballot drawing the most attention is the amendment which would change the state constitution to say that "marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized" in North Carolina.
Pastors and religious leaders planned to hold a rally in support of the amendment at the North Raleigh Hilton on Wake Forest Road Monday morning. April Coletta, of Pittsboro, volunteered over the weekend to help call 10,000 registered voters and urge them to cast a ballot in support of the amendment.
"We are telling them that the amendment protects our current marriage laws, which is the union between one man and one woman," she said.
Opponents of the amendment held a get-out-the-vote effort Saturday at the OutRaleigh gay pride festival, which brought 10,000 people to Fayetteville Street in Raleigh.
Chris Sauls, an opponent of the amendment, said he'd like to see government focus on more urgent concerns.
"It's a polarizing type of thing, but there are far more important things out there to talk about – jobs, the economy," he said.
Opponents of the amendment say it prevents recognition of civil unions and might led public employers to drop health insurance for unmarried couples with children, weaken domestic violence laws and discourage businesses from coming to North Carolina. Backers say those claims are misleading and that the amendment is necessary to prevent courts from ordering North Carolina to recognize gay marriage in the future. Early Vote turnout has been especially heavy this election, and this amendment is widely considered the biggest reason why.

*sigh*. Stone age thinking.
(to be clear, directed at anti-gay-marriage groups, not you, Tom, unless you belong to such.)

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've heard a single word about anything ELSE on the ballot, with the exception of a vote to allow beer-wine sales in three local-to-me stores. I have no idea why sales there were prohibited in the fist place, it's not a dry county and there is no "town" per-se, just three little stores in the sticks. Care to guess how I'm voting on that?

Uncle, I was riding out in your area on Sunday. I did the Raven Rock Ramble out of Harris Lake County Park. I saw some of the signs about the beer and wine sales at the convenience stores along the route. I didn't realize you couldn't buy beer at these stores because you can pretty much everywhere in the state.
With respect to the amendment, apparently NC is the only southern state not to have it and there are 30 other states that already have done it. So I guess 60% of the states are suffering from Jason's stoneage thinking.
For me, I'm not in favor of amending constitutions willy-nilly. Even the Speaker of the NC House thinks if it passes we'll be voting to repeal it in 20 years. As boomers and older voters become less of a voting block the younger voters will likely demand it. I'm not in favor of amending the US Constitution to prohibit flag burning, enabling school prayer or Nancy Polosi's attack on free speech. Those wise old dead white guys made the US Constituion hard to amend for a reason.
My son is getting to vote in his first election tomorrow. He can't vote on the amendment because he's not 18 yet, but he can vote in the primary. He's looking forward to it.

apparently NC is the only southern state not to have it As I understand it, there is a provision already that defines a marriage as man-woman, so there may be some redundancy in the amendment, at least thats what Bill Clintons radio ads say. Not a subject I am versed on, really, but the amount of debate on it caught my attention. I did the Raven Rock Ramble out of Harris Lake County Park. I figured there was some kind of "ride" going on, there were tons of bikes on Rt 42 Sunday when I was driving!

About 650 registered, probably 500 actually riding. It is a great event supporting the UNC Transplant Center. A lot of the volunteers are transplant recipients. I've done it 6 times over the past 9 or 10 years. I'm taking the Scouts out Canoeing on the Cape Fear near Lillington on May 19th. The roads there are nice to ride on and most drivers are pretty tolerant. I know they must get killed with these types of rides, the pavement is marked with about 4 different major rides in the area.

and most drivers are pretty tolerant There are LOTS of riders on those roads to be sure. In the same vein, most riders are pretty good about moving to the right some if you toot the horn for them(as required by state law) but others can be downright arrogant in blocking your pass, almost always they are bike "packs". I usually find that washing my windshield as I pass them conveys a message.

Amending constitutions can be a hazardous thing.
Look at Ohio for example. After statewide referendums to permit gambling failed three times or so since the 1990s...
After the economy tanked a few years back those basturds ran a power play once more and suckered a majority of voters into voting for it. Now we'll have that filth in our area as well as Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati all guaranteed by the Ohio CONstitution.
So who will pay for the infrastructure over time, not to mention gambling addiction illnesses and other vices picking up that seem to go with gambling?
Up to the north in the Motown, they have had a casino up there to compete with Windsor's and they're currently singing the blues with these gambling casinos not to mention the whole city teetering on bankruptcy.
It's all a sorry state of affairs. Some people will never learn.
