Those maps are really telling. But we'll never change the bassakwards minds of the uneducated "moral police". (gee, kinda sounds like the Middle East Muslims)

Boz, there's certainly a parallel to be drawn.... Amen. The argument that civil unions or marriage poses a threat to marriage is not only bogus, it's ridiculous. It was a perfect marriage of lyrics and music. A perfect marriage of meat and spices. People are hung up on the word. Catholic church doesn't recognize a marriage performed by a JP. (as is their right). Same sex can't be married in a church, certainly the right of the church and it should be. Two people of the same sex want to live together AND have the same civil rights. Let them. They pose no threat to anyone.

Not all would agree its a "civil right" to be violated..... Those who now argue that same-sex couples should be included, as a matter of civil right, within the legal definition of marriage are appealing to the constitutional principles of equal protection and equal treatment. But this is entirely inappropriate for making the case for same-sex "marriage." To argue that the Constitution guarantees equal treatment to all citizens, both men and women, does not say anything about what constitutes marriage, or a family, or a business enterprise, or a university, or a friendship. An appeal for equal treatment would certainly not lead a court to require that a small business enterprise be called a marriage just because two business partners prefer to think of their business that way. Nor would equal treatment of citizens before the law require a court to conclude that those of us who pray before the start of auto races should be allowed to redefine our auto clubs as churches.
The simple fact is that the civil right of equal treatment cannot constitute social reality by declaration. Civil rights protections function simply to assure every citizen equal treatment under the law depending on what the material dispute in law is all about. Law that is just must begin by properly recognizing and distinguishing identities and differences in reality in order to be able to give each its legal due. http://www.cpjustice.org/stories/storyReader$1178

A more likely indicator of the vote than college education is percentage of people over 65 in the respective counties. NC has 12.9% of the population over the age of 65, a quick survey at the US Census Page shows that the counties that voted for the amendment had a significantly higher percentage of residents over the age of 65 than the state overall. Nearly all of the counties that voted against the amendment had 65+ residents significantly below the state average the exception was Buncombe County (Ashville - home of Biltmore Estates). Why does this matter? Older residents vote and and are overwhelmingly against gay marriage. Younger people may be for it, but they don't vote as reliably as older voters. This is probably why polls consistently get this wrong, they oversample the young and undersample the old or don't ask only likely voters. Public opinion only matters when you show up and vote otherwise it is just b-tching. Why Polls don't get it

Now heres a dumb statement! GREENVILLE, N.C. — Passage of a constitutional amendment defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman makes North Carolina "look like Mississippi," Gov. Beverly Perdue said Friday. Mississippi? Why not Alaska? Or Colorado? Or Missouri? Or Arizona? Or......

Unc, Little factoid for you, you can marry your first cousin in NC, but you can't in MS, LA, TX and West by god Virginia. Cousin Marriage Laws Bev "maybe should call off the elections" Perdue isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. She would have likely lost the election had she decided to go for a second term.

the bassakwards minds of the uneducated Actually, I suspect you would find many of those who supported the amendment are really quite well educated. The idea that someone of a differing view on a subject is "uneducated" or stuck in "the stone age" or whatever is mighty condescending sounding to me. Painting with such a broad brush as the ones wielded by some folks on here dilutes the substance of the idea they wish to convey.
