CLeared up about 4 Gig and took off the F-Secure and things seem much better in fact just clearing out for extra space allowed the F-Secure to work better too.

However now I got another issue. Seems that the same Windows updates get brought in, installed, I shut down, they install supposedly and then when I turn it back on I see another little yellow icon show more to install and it is the same set of items for .NET framework things, the ID numbers like KB2572073 3 of 7 keep coming back.

What is happening here?

So what is this issue I now have?

Are you sure you have all the previous updates? New ones won't install if something is missing.

Have you considered a nice fresh install? My bet is that would fix everything.

I still don't like the idea of having only a 40g drive. A bigger drive, freshly installed would be my option.

Here is something I found on several posts relating to MS wanting to reinstall same security updates over and over. I have not tried this but you may want to give it a try.

"For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY (1-866-727-2338; and/or 1-866-234-6020 and/or 1-800-936-5700) in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g.,Kb2572073)."

what's happened is that your .net installation has corrupted and you need to remove the .net framework versions you have, reinstall them and then do the updates again frown

Instructions from the microsoft website....

Quote:
To successfully install the update, uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer, and then reinstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer. You may have to work through more than one of the following methods.

Method 1: Manually remove and reinstall .NET Framework

To manually remove and reinstall the .NET Framework, follow these steps:

1. Remove the .NET Framework.

a. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

b. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

c. Note each version of the .NET Framework that is already installed on the computer. Then, uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework.

d. When you are prompted, restart the computer.

2. Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean up the MSI database state for all the versions of the .NET Framework.

. Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

a. Install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility as an administrator or as a user account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

b. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Install Cleanup.

c. In the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, remove all Windows Installer applications for the .NET Framework.

3. Restart the computer.

4. Download and then reinstall all the versions of the .NET Framework that were previously installed on the computer.
To download the .NET Framework 3.5, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en

5. When you are prompted, restart the computer.

Note When you have reinstalled all the versions of the .NET Framework, you can use Windows Update to check for updates to the .NET Framework.

There is an automated removal tool, but it is not supported by microsoft.

Quote:
Method 2: Use the .NET Framework automatic cleanup tool

This tool is not intended as a substitute for the standard uninstall procedure. You should try to perform an uninstall by using the steps in Method 1, earlier in this article, before you use this cleanup tool.

The .NET Framework cleanup tool removes the .NET Framework for you. For information about how to obtain and use this tool, visit the following MSDN Web site:

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx

Note This cleanup tool deletes shared files and registry keys that are used by multiple versions of the .NET Framework. To guarantee that all versions of the .NET Framework work correctly, if you run the cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework, you must first remove all installed versions of the .NET Framework by using this cleanup tool. Then, you must reinstall all the previously installed versions starting with the lowest version number.

Suppose that you have the .NET Framework 1.1 and the .NET Framework 2.0 installed on your computer, and you plan to use this cleanup tool. In this scenario, you should use the cleanup tool to first remove the .NET Framework 1.1, and then use the cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework 2.0. After you have removed both versions, you would then reinstall .NET Framework 1.1, and then install the .NET Framework 2.0, in that sequence.

The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, about the performance or reliability of these products.

wow, I was just looking at that myself. I ran the Belarc program and it showed these 5 updates not correct. Tried two other "fixes" from the microsoft site which did noting although after one it told me to go to the computer and check the update status and it said updated.

So then found the above info which I am going to try once I get this printer software to install.

And I know that as was stated above, would be nice to put in a larger drive or to do a clean install...I have a disk that says Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 1a with some other verbage to use this disk to reinstall.

I suppose as a last resort I will have to do that but really trying not to, only cause I have never done an install.

And the wife's friend who owns this thing uses it to surf and do documents and not much more and already was ready to go buy a new machine but being the masochist I am, I figured I would try first to fix things.

Just an update. I got rid of the NET versions, had a devil of a time getting the 3.5 out of there and had to use the Revo. The link above for the removal tool has been discontinued apparently, there was another method I tried but did not quite work.

As it was I got rid of things and then downloaded each version and installed. So far OK I think, probably too soon to tell?

The owner of this machine had the updates set to auto which means they came in and installed and went I guess. I usually have ours to notify me and let me choose. And of course owner is one who knows little about computers and has a daughter who puts anything on it and so I have no idea how these NET things got so wackydoodle

For the moment still updating other items and running scans but wanted to say thanks for the help and will update further.

Last time i had this issue I think I resolved it by downloading and installing the full version (231MB) over what was there.
