OK I do not mean to make this worse but now I am confused. In the first bunch of pictures water was shown near the black seal where it met the sink bottom.

That should not be, yes? No? I am kind of confused where the problem now is but sure would like to understand. I do not understand how water on outside of the black seal is correct.

No water should be outside the seal. Otherwise it's a leak, not a seal, eh?

Water sits atop the seal between the seal, the tailpiece and the sink bottom, internally. There will always be some water here. It should not leak out.

Any water on the exterior of the seal or tailpiece is a leak that needs addressing, obviously.

And that's what I wasn't getting from the beginning. Water will get in there...i just need to make sure it doesn't come out the bottom. Now the question is....WHY is it designed this way?

Because it's easy and it works? Mostly...

Remember, there's something like a billion sinks in America. Yours leaks right now. That doesn't make the design poor, it makes something to do with your particular installation poor. Probably, as numerous folks have opined, due to the poor surface finish on the base of the sink where that seal is supposed to be made.

Ahhh I understand now. So, then to just summarize...does he have a leak or no?

Or has it been tighty'd on up?

I am not sure if my head is confused or giddy at this point but I am learning...

of course if it IS the sink and an imperfection...well he must of bought the sink just before me because that is typically MY run of luck

So I grab my largest channel locks and proceed to the bathroom to take care of business. The drain...that is.

I reach in to make sure it's nice and tight with hand first...and it turns....and turns...and turns...then stops! Last night i couldnt turn it anymore...tonight seemed pretty loose. Turned the water on......

No leaks.
