Thread tape is needed between the drain flange and the drain body, and between the drain body and the tail piece. Its worth a try to put it on the retaining nut area too, to seal any leak from under the rubber gasket. It looks like some slight leakage is coming past the rubber gasket. I sometimes load up the rubber fitting area under the basin with teflon paste (the kind that doesn't damage plastics, it will say it on the container). This will help seal leaks due to slight defects. I put some paste between the sink bottom and the rubber gasket, and around the opening of the gasket.

Your water path is either past the gasket/sink joint, or the drain flange/sink joint. That design has been around "forever" and thread tape has not been part of the equation. You sure the drain assembly instructions don't say to use either plumber's putty or silicone sealant under the drain flange? And did you use plumber's grease in the locations I suggested? And did you tighten that nut up?
