I almost always use this brand colored wood putty, after all the finishing is completed. (My sawdust/glue comment above was addressing the OP's original question.) This putty is easy to apply, wipe smooth, and I've never seen it dry/fall out.

I usually have 4 or so different flavors in my truck, just for the light touch-ups at the end...
