New drain arrived. Not installed yet...but I'm kinda confused.

See that whole just below the stopper? You can see the stopped body through that hole. How can it NOT leak from the top of the black rubber? Any water going down the drain can easily come out of those holes, no? There are 3 of them around the drain body.

.
.
The squarish hole(S) below the gasket....
(didn't the old one have them?)

They connect the sink vent hole to the drain.
They will actually suck in air through the vent,
and 99% of the water/air mixture will go down the drain.

Not to worry, follow the recommendations outlined above by all,
and test the black gasket against the bottom of the sink before
installing to be sure it mates well with the bottom,
i.e. smooth sealing surface...and be sure it's cENTERED in the
hole while snugging it up.

If the bottom edge of the sink is a sharp edge,
you might knock off the edge with a half-round file or such.

I'd smear aa little grease (vaseline) on the beveled surface
and DON'T tighten so far that it deforms like the one you
already pictured.
You're just looking for a little seal there, there is no pressure involved.

You're up late, no?

"They connect the sink vent hole to the drain."

Probably semantics, but we refer to this as the "overflow" holes. Connects the sink's overflow passage(s) to the drain.

the new one probably has them too...i just don't remember seeing them.

But as I was standing there brushing my teeth looking at the old drain...in place...my mind suddenly pictured those holes in the new one....and it got me wondering...

Yeah...bit late...Mrs worked til 1130...got home about 1145...then her "wind down" time & light snack. It's awake time together. grin

Yardo - those holes should be well above where your washer/nut end up.

sure they are. But they also create an opening in the line. IF any water was to exit those holes as it passed down the drain, that water would wind up on top of the black washer/nut...I'm just saying...the design seems flawed to me.

oo oo question...testing my plumbing knowledge

once installed would that hole of concern be IN the sink itself so that if water went into the overflow sink hole it would then go into this hole of concern and thus down the drain?

in thought the big black washer is under sink, the top part on top of sink and the hole of concern is in middle?
