Ok, so when I drained the gear lube, a couple tablespoons of water came out with the grease. The water was clear, the lube just dark blackish. So am I to suspect the water was condesation from sitting in the shop for a month or two? Last time I had water in my tailshaft (on my sailboat)the lube came out looking like coffee with cream. That was caused by a flaw in the casting, and running it for a season.

You could suspect this is condensation, yes.

Didn't we discuss the merits of changing said lube in the fall a few months back??? (Then you wouldn't be "guessing" now...)

I did drain it "back then". We were waiting to get new gaskets for the plugs, along with new sparkplugs and impeller.

BTW, do you change your impellers every two years?

If it was drained last fall, and not run, then don't worry about it. As you found previously, water in the lower unit will turn milky under use.

I can't recall the last time I replaced an impeller...

This is all assuming the motor was properly stored during the winter, where no water (rain/snow) could find it's way under the cowling...
