My kenmore......

As soon as you push start button....
look in lower front with panel off
ignitor should slowly glow to cherry red,
then get loud "Click" as valve opens and flame starts....
No 'cherry red'.....bad ignitor....

Slap a nice cool wet shirt on the 'bubbly back'.....Eeeeech !

Hey, that thing is over 30 years old !!!!!!!!!!!

How would I know if the igniter is trying?

Pop off the lower front panal and have a peek....

Does the igniter try right away

Yes, starts to heat up right away.

or does the drum turn for x seconds AND THEN the burner is supposed to light?

the ignitor gets hot enough to cause the flame sensor to trip open ( click ) and the gas will then flow and the ignitor will light the gas.

Also - shouldn't there be gas at the ignition point?

Nope, not until the gas valve opens up and allows flow.

Where can I get a wiring diagram?

Often rolled up inside the consol, some are glued on the back, some are glued to the cabinet inside.

OK - thanks. Will poke and prod today.

Just to confirm, the igniter should glow as soon as the dryer starts, AND everything should work when the front access panel is removed. In other words, I should be able to SEE the igniter and flame...

Will take a few seconds to warm up, but yes.

No wiring diagram anywhere w/ unit. Anything on-line you can refer me to? (I can't find anything myself.)

Thanks

Found the diagram under the console. Went through all the tests for the various components and all (almost) test OK.

The Diagnostic Test was good, other than "03" when I got to the Start button. Directions say this is a keyswitch or software mismatch. Started to check the touchpad, but found slight resistance when going between specified pins, BEFORE I pressed the specific switch.

Jeff - is this correct?

Pressing the switch (button) doesn't impact the multimeter (analog type).

Anyway... All the specific components down at the burner check fine. Pretty much leaves a $170 (plus shipping etc) component for a dryer that I paid $50 for and got 4 loads out of.

(sigh)

What was tested and how?

With the dryer running but no heat....wouldn't "appear" to be a start button issue....would appear to be a mute point.

Steps in sequence I performed:

1) Disconnected and checked for 110v at igniter lead while running. Zero volts.
2) Disconnected and checked for continuity each: high limit 'stat, flame sensor, thermal fuse, and thermistor. Zero resistance.*
3) Checked moisture sensor by seeing resistance change when I put my finger across the sensors.
4) Checked the gas valve solenoids by jumping from black to the other terminals. All showed continuity. Note - this is different than what the instruction sheet says how to check.
5) Figured out how to open console, and found instruction sheet.
6) Diagnostic Test - successfully put into test mode, then pressed each panel button per instructions. All sounded one beep until I got to the "Start" button which made a continuous beeping, and a flashing 03 appeared on the display.

* I have an analog multimeter here at this house. All I did was use it to check for continuity, not specific resistance. Because of the poor access to the specific components, if the needle bounced, I figured the component was good.
