We have a Tappan oven that's about 17 years old. The oven works, but it takes a long time to reach 350 degrees. Sometimes so long that we don't use it (maybe 1/2 hr). Does anyone know what could be causing this? Lori

Bummer with Thanksgiving cooking on tap....

Jeff and friends will likely tap into the solution, butttt, having a similar incident once, first of all, gas oven?

If so, does the flame "ignite" right away and heats up slow, or is there a delay between turning the oven on and the "poof" when the flame ignites??

If it's slow to ignite, grab a flashlight and peer into the bottom where the pilot light lives. If your oven is like my oven, there will be a metal tube jutting from the pilot to the front of the oven, which has a series of little bitty holes lining each side. Those holes can get clogged (especially if you clean with bleach, yeah guilty here) You can poke a toothpick into the holes to clear them out. Kudos to Al, the Cooks Appliance Repairman for teaching me this!

Ohhhhh, model number please!

Oven only or oven part of a range? Gas, electric? Model#?

Elements get red ( electric )?
Any gas smells, popping noises ( gas )?

Use a paper clip....tooth picks sometimes break off inside.

It is gas and it does ignite right away. Starting about 2 years ago it didn't ignite if it was really humid in the summer but it was fine after the humidity was gone (until the next summer). When it's humid it didn't ignite at all. My husband had a problem the other night, it took 1/2 hr to get to about 200 degrees, although today I put it on and it worked fine.

-If- your oven has an hot surface ignitor, a weak ignitor would be a prime suspect!

So, we took it apart and looked inside. The element in the little box next to the glow bar (I guess that's what you call it) is lit, but when the bar finally does light (if it does) it is very low. Could it be a clog in one of the lines? The 4 gas burners on the top work fine, my husband said the broiler was working fine but now also goes off sometimes.

Rare but possible yes....90-95% of the time we find a weak ignitor not drawing enough current ( amps ).
