This week, when shutting down, I was getting popups that program Sigmatel-IDT-SysTray was ending and a green progress bar to show me the progress. Also the same for Yahoo messenger. Now the YM is not present when shutting down. The other one remains and I get "not responding" after the green progress bar is full.
So to shut down my computer I now have an extra step. Clicking ok to that program, that XP can not seem to close-end.
Any ideas?

You need to go to your machines web site and update drivers... It's an IDT audio driver.

Well, I spent 7 hours of actual computer time to try to get rid of IE issues. Ran Malwarebytes and I disabled-re-enabled some things in MsConfig, re-installed XP sp3, new copy of Yahoo Messenger, new copy of IE 8.0.
One result of all this was a new icon lower right of my screen beside the clock.

name of it is: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver. The perosn who led me through the whole process, never commented on this. A new question about the end of program thing went in the direction of Autoruns etc. My question was abandoned when they found out I was not expereinced enough to just take the general answer and execute it.

This little icon has never been on my machine before the above fix. The only thing that may have added it was the new sp3 or the new IE or the new YM. I did nothing else, unless in MsConfig the audio entry was supposed to be left disabled. I think I re-enabled it because of its name: audio device.

Any way, my system was custom built, so:
"You need to go to your machines web site and update drivers... It's an IDT audio driver."

I know it is audio related, but what website you refer to? Windows XP? or?

well we need to know the motherboard id.

Given that you have an intel graphics display driver, I'm going to guess it is Intel.

Have a look here to identify your board. You should then be able to locate the drivers for the onboard sound.

If it's not intel, take the side off your computer and you should be able to see the make/model number of the motherboard. If not happy doing that, download Belarc Advisor and run it. On the output you should find the motherboard manufacturer.

I used the "direct" link and downloaded.
I am still having to "end" a non responding Sigmatel-SysTray upon shutdown.
As I look in the control panel, in the program list, I see:
1. IDT audio
2. Intel Audio Studio 9.98 MB
3. Intel Audio Studio 15.55 MB
(not sure why I have two Intel Audio Studio and why they are different sizes.
4. Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver
5. Sigmatel Audio

so Sigmatel is a separate program. It's size is only 1.70 MB, not that size reduces it's significance.

This shutdown "extra step" was the result of: scan using Malwarebytes, un-install and re-install of sp3, and a new copy of IE 8.0 and Yahoo Messenger. I'm not sure which of those is related to Sigmatel.
I never had the manual need to end Sigmatel before that. Windows XP can not seem to end it.

I also had to manually end Yahoo Messenger to shutdown but the answer to that one was to disable Yahoo Insider.

I've looked in Msconfig > start tab and do not see anything related to Sigmatel.

you should uninstall both copies of the idt audio and the sigmatel audio and reboot your computer first before installing the new drivers you downloaded....

edit: when you reboot, windows will say found new hardware, just click yourself past it without letting it install anything and run the driver pack you downloaded after the pc has fully loaded itself.

I forgot to mention another program, no KB shown. It is the High Definition Audio Driver Package KB835221.
The last time I removed that, at the recommendation of a tech guy in India (NOOOO offense to anyone in India or anyone who is Indian or has Indian friends), I lost sound for over a month before anyone could figure out the solution.

Is that what I just downloaded with that "here" link?

no

edit:
Ok, that was a bit sharp of an answer, sorry.

The "kbb" updates are from microsoft, not necessarily the vendor. You should NEVER let microsoft update install new drivers for any hardware. If it offers a new one you should check with the vendor of the item to see if they have released new drivers. Most hardware driver problems are due to MS installing the wrong or inappropriate driver!

The "here" link is to the latest driver provided by your motherboard manufacturer for that board and sound card chipset.
