I'd like to try a pinned post just to talk about music and see how well it's received.

I just picked up a new(to me) CD by Bob Dylan which was released in 2006. Title: Modern Times. It blew me away! Much different from the old stuff.

IMO either you love him or you won't..
Now I know a couple of members here``
who seemed to love and jump on the chance to TRY..
and put Dylan down..bringing up whatever...
Here is a quote I like....
Quote:

The minute you try to grab hold of Dylan
he's no longer where he was.
He's like a flame:
If you try to hold him in your hand you'll
surely get burned. Dylan's life of change and
constant disappearances and constant transformations
makes you yearn to hold him.. and to nail him down.
And that's why his fan base is so obsessive
so desirous of finding the truth and the absolutes
and the answers to him - things that Dylan
will never provide and will only frustrate....

`~~~~
Dylan is difficult and mysterious and evasive
and frustrating and it only makes you
identify with him all the more as he skirts identity.

I listen to Dylan all the time..
mainly older albums..to get a hint of
``` The Joker and the Thief```
Don't have much to add
..being it means so little
to many others...and what it means to me..
I can't put in to words..so others``can understand..
Oh and no.. I haven't heard
any of the newest`` Dylan`` yet..
thou... I will make a point to do so !!
Thank You Kindly Dave..
Back when God was in short pants, we were all clustered at the stage door to catch a glimpse of Dylan as he left after the concert when he went electric. His limo was stalled by the crowd of people and somebody tried the door. It opened. He pushed my friend Ann into the car. After a short minute she climbed back out and we were all frothing at the mouth to know what he said.
Her reply?
"He said, "Get out of the car"
I doubt my taste in music is very common here.
I do like a variety, but most of the music that I truly love is extremely obscure, or it's dance music.
I doubt many here are fans of breakbeat or trance.
First I'd have to know what it is.
Example? Give me a title and I can listen to thirty seconds of it on iTunes.
My favorite music includes Radiohead, Tool, Pink Floyd (especially the Dark Side), Nirvana, Deep Purple (the very old stuff...), Feist, Poe, The Velvet Underground, and a few more obscure acts.
I prefer to listen to entire albums. Shuffle/random buttons annoy me. I most enjoy artists who's CD's flow together to form a single large work (Dark side of the Moon being a great example of this).
I find myself very disinterested in music these days. I'm something of an audiophile (tho you may not guess that from my tastes), and the recording quality of the last 5/10 years is extremely disappointing. Everything is dynamically compressed so it'll sound OK in MP3 format. No more is it full of subtlty and detail. We live in a time when we should be able to record the most perfect recordings ever made, but the studios know their market. Ipods and bookshelf systems with limited power/response and dynamic range, or people driving around in their cars, background noises drowning out the small stuff I so enjoyed...
Oh K I will chime in...music...like others I kind of stick to what I call the oldies of my time...I tend to get into phases. So it may be rock, or may be a bit of reggae and then maybe movie soundtracks. I like what is termed celtic music some of it traditional and some a bit more punkish. So while I might be lsitening to Clannad or enya I can move over to Flogging Molly and Pogues
I like maybe nostalgia back to original Motown or blues.
I detest rap music
country I take in small doses...I need to be in that mood...
Pogues. A tragic case of wasted talent was Shane MacGowan. "Fairytale Of New York" is one of my favourite songs. And "Dirty Old Town". He wasn't that great to look at.
And the Boys from the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out on Christmas Day.
It needs to be a great song. Some of those country singers have great pipes. Patsy melts my hard heart.
My wife has a thing for Dropkick Murphy....
The pogues certainly recorded some interesting stuff. Always worth a listen.
Many of the best are wasted on themselves. Plenty of examples in the bands listed above by all! It will never cease to amaze me that Lou Reed survived the '60's....
Funny thing is of the bands who have "straightened out", most of them sucked after. eg. Aerosmith.
Sex, Drugs and Rock'n'Roll. Trinity of Rock.
I am a big Dropkick listener..along with Black 47
as for country...I like it as long as they dont get into that twangy hee haw sound...probably why I cant stand Chesney for longer than 2 minutes
I been getting back into some old blues..Howling Wolf and such...
as for Joe Walsh is that James Gang Joe or afterwards Joe?
and Jethro Tull comes to mind for some reason
I'm still stuck on Lightfoot. He's my lifetime favorite. In fact, he's going to be in Phoenix I believe in October and I'm going to that concert if I have to sleep with a scalper.
If Jim Croce hadn't been killed, he may have become my favorite. It's a shame he's best known for his novelty songs because the rest of his work had real content. Just like Jerry Reed, we all know his funny stuff but you can't even find his serious work.
I just bought a number of CD's to lighten things up at work:
- Sergeant Pepper...and a Paul McCartney one
- Best of Simon & Garfunkle
- Huey Louis and the News
- Mamas & the Papas
- Peter Paul & Mary
- Fleetwood Mac
- The Eagles
- ABBA and
- Ella Fitzgerald
One of the BEST I've found recently is Bruce Springsteen's "We Shall Overcome" - The Seeger Sessions.
We're having a party tonight!!
Jerry Reed died a couple of days ago. I was just saying that I never saw him in a movie but appreciated his serious music more than anything else. I wish my turntable worked. I'd drag out his old LP's and play a couple for you. It has always saddened me to see an excellent musician overlooked for his serious work and climb to fame on novelty songs. Jim Croce comes to mind.
THANK YOU! I loved this comment!
"honestly, i knew of them before i heard them on the radio b/c they were everywhere! u would have to be living in a 3rd world country to not know who the jb's are! ha!"
At least I know it's not CRAP - even if it's not my kind of music, I won't feel like a fool giving it somebody. Being a dinasaur I haven't gone to YouTube except by being linked to it. Maybe I should come out of the dark!
But some of us need to be around to tell the kids what it was like when we roamed the world without electricity!
DD, I'm afraid opinionated is my way.... I try to be open, but sometimes I fail.
Hanson's a bit fluffy for me. I prefer music that has something to say beyond La-La-La, ain't I pretty....
Hanson's on par with Jonas bros, New Kids, and all the other teenage girl focused pap in my book.
But they sell millions, so they must be good, right?
To each their own!
To rid it of which fallicy? New or Kids?
Right now I'm listening to an outstanding Canadian artist: Feist. Beautiful songwriting, excellent instrumentation and great vocal quality.
The only drawback is the lowest-common-denominator mixing/engineering of the recording, same as just about any modern recording, optomized for bloody MP3.....
Whatchall listening to right now?
"Whatchall listening to right now?"
Guy Clark, a Texas treasure, an American poet in music given to me by a friend. The south coast of Texas is going to get pounded. I hope all are safe.
"The south coast of Texas is a thin slice of life
It's salty and hard and as stern as a knife
Where the wind is for blowin', the hurricanes are showin'
The snakes how to swim and the trees how to lean"
And the shrimpers and their ladies are out in the beer joints
Drinkin' em down for they sail with the dawn
They're bound for the Mexican bay of Campeche
And the deckhands are singing "Adios, Joly Blon"
Joly Blon is Cajun for Pretty Blonde.
Hope you enjoy Lightfoot, Donkey Dave! The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a classic even if only for us Midwesterners or transplanted ones like you.
CKLW made that song a huge hit back in their heyday of TOP 40 AM ROCKERS!
I heard some lady was disappointed at a recent concert of his, not because of his music, but because she remembered him as a healthy hunk of man. Seems he suffered the same problem that killed John Ritter and he took years to
recuperate but does not look right like himself just yet.
I like Lightfoot...Sundown...Wreck of Edmund Fitz...Carefree Highway...Rainy Day People...Beautiful...Daylight Katy...and so on.
How Could I forget one of his biggest classics, If You Could Read My Mind...Thanks for reminding me.
Some 2000 era musical group remade that song into a dance tune with a fast moving beat about 5 years ago. Not sure if you'd like it, but I thought it was OK. Can not think of the group, you probably would not have heard of them anyway. I know I did not.
Billy Vera and the Beaters, a one hit wonder. "At This Moment" What a great song and so well done. But there was another one on that album that got past most of us. It's my favorite song of his but it certainly is more effective in audio rather than type.
"Hopeless Romantic"
Sometimes on Sundays
I sit by the TV
Watching sad movies alone
When it gets to the part
Where the little dog dies
I cry
Sometimes I think
I was born just a little
Behind or ahead of my time
I live in a dream world
Of caring and sharing
And good guys and nobody lies
I'm a believer
And much more than anything
I believe in you
You're not a deceiver
And if you told me the ocean went dry
I'd believe it was true
So call me a hopeless romantic
Because I can still believe
I can still believe in true love
and hopeless romantics
Still can find a way
To make true love last these days
If you are a victim of sentimental music, give this a listen. Keep in mind much bloodshed accompanied the singing of these songs. This one was written in a prison cell. He's goig to meet the hangman.
Good stuff, Spack.
There was a movie 40 or 50 years ago called The Snake Pit. It was in a women's mental institution. There is a passage in Smetana's Ma Vlast (which means My Country) In the movie they sing to the music of the last movement of Ma Vlast--Going home, Going Home, I am going home" They aren't, of course, going anywhere.
No joy right now.
Thanks, Yardo. The memories are flooding in on me. My mum and my sister and I used to go to the movie matinee every Saturday. It cost a quarter to get in and the same for popcorn and a drink. She had to scrimp to pay for that, but she always found a way. Can you imagine 75 cents was so hard to come by?
I like trance. My favorite dance genre is breakbeat.
Breakbeat is defined as not having repetitious beats, unlike techno. Trance is generally in between the two. However, most dance is more repetitious than more mainstream music. A lot of dance does have lyrics though.
Anyhow, generalizing an entire genre of music as "shite" because you hate it is rather ignorant.
Baby mine, drool is too small a word, When I drive alone at night, I blare Guy Clark or Emmy Lou. Sometimes The Chieftains. I saw the Stones and the Beatles in person and I would take a night with Guy or Emmy Lou over either of them.
You guys were talking earlier about the Hansons. There's a fairly new group called Thriving Ivory I've just started listening to. My first thought was the did sound like the Hansons until I listened more and it seems the lead singer sounds a lot like the lead singer from Rush. Of course these are youngun's...
I went ahead and included both the video version and the acoustic version. I like the acoustic version better.
Talkabout an oxymoron or something like it!
A computer is as much an instrument as anything else, capable of making beautiful sounds and fantastic music.
The acoustic VS electrical VS electronic division is arbitrary. An instrument creates sounds and a person using the instrument creates music, simple as that.
Keep in mind, the signal from an electric guitar is always amplified electronically and is usually modified as well. No one disregards the electric guitar on that basis.
Check this one out, skip to 1:45 since you will hate the repetitious intro;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOjXORgDjKg
I can't make you like it (and I wouldn't want to), though perhaps I can get you to appreciate the depth and complexity. It does have a repetitive beat (but so does most modern pop music), but get past that and consider the song as a whole. It's certainly not mindless.
Music is patterns, and electronica only moreso. The depth and beauty requires patience to discern for the new listener. Like heavy metal to the classical ear, it just seems like noise at first listen. The layered, shifting patterns reveal themselves only to the willing. Sometimes a toke may help
I'm not a dance/trance/electronic fan per se. I'm a fan of Radiohead, Tool, Floyd, Nirvana... And a bunch of more eclectic stuff too... But I don't limit myself to particular music styles. I limit myself to what I think of as Quality music. Stuff with intricate arrangements, or beautiful simple clarity. Every music style I've ever heard has a small percentage of artists who actually ARE artists, creating truly Quality music.
I capitalize Quality here. Think Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance sort of Quality.
I was in Toronto a couple of weeks ago doing a job at the Hard Rock Cafe on Yonge Street. Check out the bridge on Bob Dylan’s guitar - its hand carved!
I tried posting the photos here, but they were too big.
Didn't get the full story on the wood bridge, but its pretty cool.
Hey gang wake up!
The other night I was joshing with my wife and put together a little line, "I know I probably bore you but I'm not too clever I just adore you."
A light went on and I had to go back and fire up the computer. I put those lines in Google and came back with Frank Sinatra, "Call me irresponsible." Then I had to download it. What a song! Check it out.
This man has a voice I could never tire of:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqj64EJc1J4
I heard the song years ago and can't stop listening.
During 1971, Whittaker hosted a radio program in England, backed by a full orchestra with arrangements by Zack Lawrence. Whittaker is quoted as saying that "one of the ideas I had was to invite listeners to send their poems or lyrics to me and I would make songs out of them. We got a million replies, and I did one each week for 26 weeks."[1] Ron A. Webster, a silversmith from Birmingham, England (not to be confused with the footballer named Ron Webster, who played for Derby County F.C.), sent Whittaker his poem titled "The Last Farewell", and this became one of the selections to appear on the radio program. It was subsequently recorded and featured on Whittaker's 1971 album, New World in the Morning (A Special Kind of Man in the US and Canada), although the song failed to reach the music charts.
According to Whittaker, in 1975 the wife of a program director for a radio station in Atlanta, Georgia was traveling in Canada and heard Whittaker's recording on the radio; when she returned to the United States, she asked her husband to play the song on the station. After playing the song a few times, listeners began calling the station to find out more about the song and singer, and soon thereafter "The Last Farewell" was on its way onto the charts. The single reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the spring of 1975, peaking at #19. It also went to #1 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart.[2] The response to the song in America led the single to achieve success in other parts of the world, including in England, where the song reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart.[3] It also went to #1 in 11 other countries and sold an estimated 11 million copies worldwide,[4] making it by far Whittaker's best-known song around the world.
The opening of "The Last Farewell" features a French horn solo that was arranged by Lawrence on the initial airing of the radio program. Whittaker has stated that he feels much of the song's appeal comes from the classical-sounding nature of this instrumental arrangement at the beginning of the song.
I'm looking for a song...woke up to it so have no idea who it is...the singing is going, then a guy with a deep voice comes in an says "tell me what you want" then some more singing then he comes back with "tell me what you need"....
guess its considered pop...
I know...not very informative...but somebody has to know it from that....
Van Morrison:
Tell me what you want, tell me what it is
Tell me what you want, tell me what it is
Everybodys got me moaning
Every single night and day
Cant stand it anyway
Everybodys got me moaning
Tell me what you want, yeah,
Tell me what you need
Tell me what it is, say what
Tell me what you want, tell me what it is
Tell me what you need, see if I can get it
Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me
Tell me, tell me, tell me
Tell me what you want, tell me
What you need
See if I can get it right now, child
Tell me, tell me, tell me, etc.
Tell me baby what you want
Youre coming on strong, coming on strong
Tell me what you want baby, tell me
What you need
White Tie Affair:
The sun has come up and the time is here
I stare into your room and see that your still not there
I'm reflecting the parametics, and it's all falling apart
Your heart stands still, but time moves on
Whoever thought that it could go wrong
It's infectious and pathetic
and we're all falling apart
Tell me what you want, tell me what you need
I tried to help, but you won't let me
be the one to change your mind
is it so hard to see
Tell me what you want, tell me what you need
I tried to help, but you help let me
be the one to change your mind
it's hard to believe
The screams rang out through the night once he fell
and the knife runs deep, like a needle casted spell
I'm reflecting when I said it and you were falling apart
you grabbed your keys and closed the door
on the life that you didn't wanna live anymore
It's infectious yet poetic
you have fallen apart
Don't fade away, I won't turn the page
Don't fade away...
Tell me what you want, tell me what you need
I'll do anything just to make you breathe
Tell me what you want, tell me what you need
I tried to help, but you won't let me
be the one to change your mind
is it so hard to see
Tell me what you want, tell me what you need
I tried to help, but you help let me
be the one to change your mind
it's hard to believe
(Don't fade away)
Tell me, that you're watching over me
Tell me, you're watching over me
Course then there was the Doobie Brothers:
Easy, time won't keep you waitin' any longer
Than you waited in the past
Cool and breezy, winds are blowin' sweetly
On the edges of the garden at last
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Look into my eyes and you'll see me standin' there
Feelin' happiness inside you now
You always knew it was a state of mind
You're just reelin', takin' in the thoughts around you
Every one's got secrets you must find
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Look into my eyes and you'll see me standin' there
Oo, it's so easy
Cool and breezy
What a feelin'
It's got me reelin'
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Tell me what you want and I'll give you what you need
Look into my eyes and you'll see me standin' there
Well I do like most of their music and the CD that those lyrics came from was a song called "Rock Star". I also liked "If Everyone Cared" and "Savin' Me"....just a few to mention. I'm an old time rocker but the local station (98 Rock) sorta did some changes and I was not a happer camper with the music they were playing. I went country for a while but then came back to rock and roll once again. I still don't care for the music 98 Rock plays most of the time, I guess rock and roll has changed and most of the new groups out there, I don't really care for, guess i'm just too old, lol....still love the old rock and roll, stones, CSNY, def leppard, bad company, acdc, i think you get the idea....
Man, I just thought I'd peek in on this thread......did this topic explode, or what? No way I can go through and read all 12 pages so far, but I skimmed a few.
Anyway, I'm in my 50's, had my fun as a weekend warrior in bar bands for a few years, a few years back, and I can appreciate any music 'except' Rap (not really music........unless you put Aerosmith and Run DMC together), Hip Hop, and Opera. I can go for country, easy jazz, blues, Flamingo guitar, R&B, Swing, Rock (although that can break down to 20 sub categories), etc.
But an album came to mind as I read some of the post. It is an album that has been called by many as 'the greatest album to never have a hit song', by one I consider to have attained the level of musical 'genius', Elton John. (Although I don't know if I'd like the guy, if I met him)
The album is called 'Tumbleweed Connection'. Taupin and John created this album with the theme of the early American west. Even the album cover (brown and white photo cover) had the look of antiquity. The songs tell stories of outlaws, civil war, romance, and love lost.
Perhaps my favorite cut is 'Talking Old Soldiers'. It is just Elton and his piano as he plays both a young man, and an old soldier who has seen the horrors of war and is growing old, and outliving those that experienced it with him, thus, running out of people he can talk to.
How two Brits, in their 20's, could create this masterpiece, with this theme, is beyond me, but if you haven't heard it, you are depriving yourself.
Here's an info link in Wiki:
I find this song so catchy. You don't often see the accordion in such a prominent role in a pop song.
And once I'm knee-deep in whiskey at the club, this song is awesome to dance to.
I have not looked at all 14+ pages.
I was born in 1951.
The only music I listen to is 1955-1975.
The songs were poetry with lyrics that rhyme, and told stories.
The music, after that, to me, is nothing but noise.
Rock n Rock Forever.
Sadly the world was denied decades of music with the early deaths of Rick Nelson, John Lennon, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, many more. And in the last 2-3 years we lost Gene Pitney and Johnny Maestro. And, you guessed it, they died in the hotels overnight during CONCERT tours. Their music will never die.
Roy Orbsion fan?
Watch this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol7SzS8F7PI
And the during this award presentation in Antwerp Belgium, only a couple weeks before his death, he performed 3 of his greatest hits. One, "You Got It" was never before perfomed live until that night.
All the videos of those 3 hits on that date in 1988, are on Youtube.
As you can see the crowd in that 25,000 seat venue was totally unbelievable.
And the same with their incomes. On 60 Minutes this past weekend, a portion of the show was about some of the old legends. I believe they said that Elvis's estate still makes about $50 million a year in royalties.
Cept for Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker, Hawthorne, Melville, oh daggit, they're not that bad.
Censorship kills all art, painting, writing, all. If you don't like it, don't lookatit.
I know some "Plain Sect" people, Amish, Mennonites, whatever we call them. They are shrewd traders but they keep their word once given. But they are not preparing their children for any life other than their traditional way. History has passed many a culture by for better or worse. But gone is gone. You want horse and buggy? Go on up to New Hamburg or Wallenstein.
I wanted to mention my amazement at an app called Soundhound. You may have heard of its competitor, Shazam.
I'm constantly coming across songs I might like that are playing in the background or in the mall or somewhere that I can't really get any lyrics so that I'll be able to find the song. They are both programs that listen to a song that's playing (Soundhound will even listen to you try to hum the song), and then tell you what the song is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw5chOJLZRU
Can you discern any of the lyrics in the first 20 seconds of that video? Soundhound had it figured out within 10 seconds. A guy in New Zealand makes a video in the early 90s and a song is playing on the radio. 20 years later a guy in Canada sees the video from across the world and wants to know the song, so he grabs his cell phone and it tells him. The world is friggin amazing I say.
I guess Brel and Aznavour are huge male names. Piaf is inimitable. She doesn't sound anything like Billie Holliday but there's a similar undertone of a hard life. She had a thing for Yves Montand, no?
Just a song that says it all sometimes. (Contains offensive lyrics)
Yep I got a warped sense of humour, but as I state, might not be your cup of tea so you been warned but I would love to dedicate it to all the politicians out there
That's probably the thing I love most about youtube. Relatively average/unknown people can go and do a cover of a song or make their own music and get recognition without any record deal or anything.
With a few hundred bucks in equipment, talent and time, these people have a market of tens of millions to show their work to. What were their options 10 years ago?
Very fascinating. What is amazing for me is I do not listen to much radio at all anymore for music. I listen to radio for various talk shows, mostly sports and such and that is it. Strangely, I pick up "new" music from Youtube, sometimes just because someone points me to a link for something and then off to the side I see other links for videos and give them a listen and either quick end them or sit and listen, bookmark for reference and then go find more from that group/person and at some point will download that music. I have picked up more interesting music from YouTube in the past few months then I have in years from radio...
If you disrespect anybody
That you run in to
How in the world do you think
Anybody's s'posed to respect you
If you don't give a heck 'bout the man
With the Bible in his hand
Just get out the way
And let the gentle man do his thing
You the kind of gentleman
That want everything your way
Take the sheet off your face, boy
It's a brand new day
Respect yourself, respect yourself
If you don't respect yourself
Ain't nobody gonna give a good cahoot, na na na na
Respect yourself, respect yourself
If you're walking 'round
Think'n that the world
Owes you something
'Cause you're here
You goin' out
The world backwards
Like you did
When you first come here
Keep talkin' 'bout the president
Won't stop evolution
Put your hand on your mouth
When you cough, that'll help the solution
Oh, you cuss around women
And you don't even know their names
And you dumb enough to think
That'll make you a big ol man
Respect yourself, respect yourself
If you don't respect yourself
Ain't nobody gonna give a good cahoot, na na na na
Respect yourself, respect yourself
Respect yourself, respect yourself
I watched a short film
over last Easter Weekend..
Watched it four `times`!..
And wept each time` anew`` crazy
As the graphic nature of
the portrayal of ~His~ `Crucifixion~
was more than I could
"almost bear" to watch.. frown
I Loved the Song that
was playing`in the background
during much of the movie...
It Speaks... to me much on
~~~~~ Love smile
( This is not !
`a graphic rendition` of the song` smile ))))))))))))
