My Mother-In-Law has a Kenmore washer about 7 years old that has started leaving black marks on her clothes. She lives alone and there are no clothes washed with grease or suet on them. I have checked under the machine but see no sign of transmission leaks. Any Ideas?

We had that problem with our Maytag about a year ago and the cause was a leaking seal at the bottom of the tub. Since it was 22 years old, we opted to replace it.

Did you check to see that the agitator was still moving? if only the agitator cap is moving then your agitator is striped and it is griding rubber into your clothes.
It also could be a grease leak.

This model is a direct-drive unit, and probably has a bad top seal on the agitator shaft. Unfortunately this requires dropping the transmission to repair, and although the seal kit is cheap, the labor is extensive.
