The best you can do to rectify the situation is to wrap sandpaper around dowels and try to bring back the original profile of the damaged details... You wont be able to bring it all back, but you can "clean" it up a bit.. If your staining and varnishing it, thats the best you can do.. If your painting it, you can build up damaged areas with exterior wood putty!!
Again... I feel your pain, and admire you for hanging in there!!
