Not how deep so much...but how much of a reach do the roots need? Say, for example, is a 1 ft sq box enough?

THanks. and in general...how often to water plants? I put pepper and tomato in containers monday night then watered...nothing yesterday...checked them this morning and soil is still moist...but gave a little water anyway...

Plant melons on hills for optimum growth. The hilled soil gets more sun, thus more warmth. I successfully grew cantaloupe north of here several years ago, they were fabulous. I have moved to a warmer zone and am going to try watermelon this year, as well as the cantaloupes. For larger melons, keep to one fruit per vine. You can also cut the bottom from a 2 litre bottle and stab the neck into the soil near the plants. Poor water with a bit of fertilizer into it and it will slowly leach into the soil.

Hope this helps. I am in the middle of moving, otherwise I would have my handy dandy gardening book to tell you the best companion plants.

Good luck,
Teresa
