I got a very aggressive pop-up from a registry-checker sales site. The URL promptly went into my hosts file so the computer won't allow them any more.

WinAntiVirus remover

The site maker is very clever, so even makes it difficult NOT to get to it in hosts by using a referrer site, like https://secure. _ _ _ _ etc.

IE7 is trying to block it. It comes up with a bar warning the this web site trying to download a file. It still manages to pop up a couple of windows that I need to close. It is only on this web site that I experience the problem.

J, have you run any spyware scans like Adaware and Spybot? If not, you should (make sure you update them after you install them and before you run them) and then add Spywareblaster. Linkies for these are in the top thread here.

I see that you mentioned IE7, have you tried Firefox as a browser and if so do you get the popups using it? I believe quite a few users here are using Firefox.

you can download popup blocker by panicware. they have a free version. also, if you firefox, they also have a popup blocker. nice to have 2 of them working for ya. no popups, no ads, no nothing. get rid of explorer.
