I am going to send my resume to a company who a friend of mine recommended for me. He's previously worked with the owners of the company. Should I mention his name in my cover letter or leave it out? Thanks in advance for your help!

personally I would contact the friend and ask if it is OK to use his name and if it might cause any problems. for all you know, his experience with the person in question might have been most unpleasant!!

Precisely!
Your friend should know if mentionning his name will help or hinder your chances of making it to the interview.

And perhaps if he is in good standing with them and continued some form of communication, he might be willing to forward your resume along. Sometimes this can help a company when a resume accompanies a personal reference as opposed to being one in a sea of other resumes.

Just a thought.
