The best and most important piece of safety equipment is a constant awareness and respect for your tools.

First and foremost is read the manual and make sure that the saw is set up properly nothing more dangerous than a powertool not properly tuned or user not familiar with the tool. Wear eye protection at all times, wear a dust mask if cutting materials like MDF, use push sticks they very easy to make, featherboards should be an easy project, make your own zero clearance throat plates to lessen tear out on what you are cutting. There a lot of jigs that you can easily make with your table saw. Have fun and be safe and go make some saw dust!

lots of good info posted for ya and i'm new to this site but have played in the shop some...for starting off i'd go with something small in length so that you don't find yourself in a pinch needing someone on the other end to catch the work piece...don't go too fast...and make sure that you clean it up free of sawdust when done, may go without saying but i've started mine up a couple of times after having forgotten to do so and got a cloud of sawdust to surprise me
oh and make sure that you can turn it off quicky if needed
the last time i used mine was this summer when i made a fence my wife recorded off of some TV show...instead of buying the lattice i just ripped 2x4's into quarters and it turned out pretty darn good...i found that it took more patience than i normally have but it was fun to get out there and do it

I know this seems like a no-brainer, but never try to clear dust or small pieces of wood away from the blade with your HAND, while the blade is turning; and do not try to cut free-hand (without a fence or miter gauge). I was a wood shop teacher for 10 years, and I've seen grown people, some actual adults, do some really stupid stuff around dangerous shop tools.

That's amazing but I think it's still on my "don't try this at home" list.

No glasses, no dust mask, no guards. I'm sure he has some very good workman's compensation insurance though. If it was safe, I'd love to try it. It's probably exactly how the mexicans work with ironwood a hundred miles south of here.

and actually take note of his hands when working around the blade. firmly grounded on the table when feeding, perhaps not so dangerous (by old olive wood carver standards anyway). have done that plenty freehand cutting on a tile saw (which of course isn't going to tear my hands up too bad) but you do get excellent control.
