Well, the good nooz is that you don't have to.........Hmmmmm, is that good nooz?? Read below - -

"Q: I recently took a demonstration drive in a 2005 Passat TDI sedan. I liked the car in every respect except one: There is no dipstick to check the transmission fluid. The dealer service adviser said a diagnostic computer and special tools are required to check and top off the fluid. On further investigation, I found that VW is not the only automaker to use a sealed transmission. I think the lack of a simple dipstick could lead to expensive service or repairs because seals wear and dry out over time. Are my fears groundless or should I look for a vehicle with a dipstick?

A: A growing number of automakers have eliminated the automatic-transmission dipstick, placing this component in the same company as a manual transmission, 4x4 transfer case or rear differential.

The reasoning varies: Fluid replacement or additions are no longer deemed necessary, to lessen the chance of contamination or improper fluid being added, or perhaps to simply save a buck or two. Checking the fluid level generally requires using a scan tool to ensure the transmission is at the specified temperature, then a fitting is opened on the side of the transmission. The presence or lack of fluid at this location indicates proper fluid level. Adding fluid is more of a challenge than before as there is no longer a filler tube in which to pour it."

Having quoted that, I remain somewhat puzzled as to whether or not I'd want that system either

VW passat is now of my list of new cars and other VWs that have the same anti owner servicing.
If they apply the same "scam" to skoda (a vw company) its also of my list VW i will also spread this info around the internet.Victory to the winner won't be you VW.

Certainly not the everyday owner, but for someone like me that has a lift, finding the fill and drain plugs probably aren't a big challenge. They're probably the same as a standard shift tranny or a rear-end. You pull the fill plug and if nothing comes out you add until it does.
It's just another way to charge a diagnostic fee to add 2 ounces of oil.
I'm sure the enginners meant well, but that is what the end result is.
