I have a Trane heat pump. When it comes on, occasionally, there is a strange smell-some type of chemical smell like ozone for lack of a better description. Any idea what could cause this? This is a 2 yr. old house with 2 Trane heat pumps--a 5 and a 2 1/2.
Thanks
Fred in Atlanta

Did you get an electronic air cleaner? It would make ozone.

No. The thermostat says "clean air filter". But, the AC people haven't got here yet.
Thanks.

When the air flow is lowered due to dirty filters, the electric backup elements get hotter; perhaps hot enough to burn off some coatings of household chemicals that had gathered. There is no reason for an ozone smell from the sealed system, unless a small leak is burning the refrigerant. This is all conjecture, as that would have to be discovered by a tech at your site.
