Excerpt from a post by a felow beagler who lives in West Virginia:
"The other day when I lost my dog, a friend of mine and I went back that night to look for her just in case. No luck but then again were there the next day and widened our search area. He heard her whining when he called her name and finally found her hiding in a huge brush pile. She is severely mutilated and even if she survives will never run again. Vet says she has nerve damage to the spine and will probably lose the use of a back leg and she lost an eye. We will decide tomorrow if she needs to be put down. It was a miracle she survived as long as she did."

not the yotes fault.

she ventured into their territory, they did what wild animals do. the law of nature.

i'm sure sorry the dog is hurt. hope she gets well soon.

the law of nature.

Exactly.
The same law that says all animals have a higher predator looking for them. In the case of the coyote, care to guess who it is?

So he knew there were coyotes in the area and they posed a danger to the beagle and failed to prevent the beagle from running away .... shoot the bastard (coyote)!

Are very few areas anymore where there are not coyotes. Pretty much a given anywhere on the eastern seaboard.

In reply to:

The purpose of the outing was to chase rabbits. Mighty hard to do with the dog on the leash!

maybe dog needs to learn to come when called, no matter what?

not the yotes fault. and humans are not natural predators of yotes, some just decide they don't like them and decided to kill them.

here's one you can say hooray over.

saw a dead one, got hit by a car, about 3 blocks from here (at work). i found it very sad, cuz we are building in their area and they have no where to go. beautiful creature - dead.

So simplistic, but thats not how it works with hunting dogs. They often are not even withing range of your voice, human voice does not carry very far in the woods.

In reply to:

not the yotes fault

Never said it was a matter of "fault". "Fault" does not exist in the natural world.

In reply to:

Actually, we are. Like it or not, in the world of predators, man is at the top.

In reply to:

some just decide they don't like them and decided to kill them.

The decision to kill is based on some premise. Population control, harvesting the fur, protection of livestock ect.
Is that any different from someone who decides they don't like mice in the house and set a trap, or Dcon, for it?

Update on the hound:

"This morning I went to check on my beagle and the vet said she was getting worse and suggested we end her suffering which we did at 10:30 this am. She was the foundaion female that I was using to build my line and not because she was mine but she was a damned good dog. More than enough hunt and brains galore and not bad in the looks department either. Her speed was based on gears as needed. I have seen her circle a rabbit at a full run and I have seen her slow to a near crawl when conditions were bad. She gave me 3 litters of 6 pups each and raised all of them without losing a pup. She was 7 years old. I will miss her."

We have coyotes around here, big time now. There really has not been anything bad happen, yet. I keep an eagle eye on Winnie, though. Between the 'Yotes, the fisher Cats and the Great Horned Owls...poor Winnie, at 15 pounds, doesn't have a chance.....should she ever be alone!
