I am installing a Nutone Heat-A-Ventlite combination in my bathroom. It is on its own 20amp circuit w/ 12ga wire. The instructions show 3 hot supply's going to the unit (heater/fan/light). Do I need a 5 conductor wire from the switch to the unit? (3 hots / 1 neutral / 1 ground)
For some reason, perhaps lack of sleep, this is confusing the heck out of me. Thanks for any and all help.

This is a very confusing appliance to wire. To add to it the instructions/diagrams suck.
Yes, you either need a piece of 12/4 (12/2/2) or you need to run a 12/2 and a 12/3.

Take you time and carefully decipher the color coding in the wiring diagram.

I had considered running the 12-2 and 12-3 but wasn't sure if that was ethical or not. I guess as long as you have the correct amount of conductors, it makes no difference what the color of the insulation is as long as you don't get them mixed up on either end. Pre-labeling and or wire tracing would be a good idea when the 12-2 / 12-3 solution os used.
Thanks for your input.

Looks like you do need that many wires. I assume you need a 12/2 WG and maybe a 14/2 WG. There is a nice wiring diagram at NuTone's website:

Heat-A-Lite® MODEL: 9013NL

Your model may be different, but probably not by much.

If I do this method I use the 12/2 for the heat and the 12/3 for the fan and light.

This is a dedicated 20 amp circuit. He CANNOT mix #12 & #14.

Can't use the 14-2 since this is a 20amp circuit. It will be 12ga all around.

The diagram in the .pdf link is much clearer than the ones I've seen. Only thing is the ones I have done have had a hot and neutral for each device in the unit.

Yeah, I went to the website and the diagram is the same one I have here. I may just go ahead and use two runs of 12/3 since I have the wire here and save myself another trip to the Big Box Store up the road.
