I am new to the site. I have a snowblower C950-52478 engine 143-746082 8Hp/28( i beleive is the correct number) The snowblower overheated and fire and smoke was visable from the muffler. I want to open the engine and take a look. But can't find the manuals anywhere. Does anyone know where I need to look and you think the engine is the problem. I am no mechanic. But I am good with manuals and handy as well
Thank you

This time of the year snow is blown (often) when it's
dark. The flame visible from the exhaust is VERY COMMON,
and if not dark, wouldn't even be noticeable. The smoke
could be TOO MUCH OIL in the crankcase...wear in the
engine...pressure in the crankcase due to bad crankcase
breather valve, leaking seal or gasket...SO, your post is
a bit confusing to clearly "SEE" what you're dealing with?
If you REALLY WORKED the blower, you could also have smoked
the auger belt from the amount of snow you were asking it
to move?

Your engine is a tecumseh. Their web site will have manuals for it. Also, a service manual is available at:

tecumseh service manual, L head engines

THat might help. If you want any specific help, let us know

Good luck,

er, somethin'....

Hi Tcumcman, thanks for the reply. Sorry, I was not to clear. I was pushing heavy & wet snow at the time when it happened. I will check further and advise.

Hi i too have the same model snowblower....now i know this is an old old thread but i was wondering if anyone can still help me...i'm looking for the manuel for the the snowblower itself so i can get specs on it...it is a Craftsman 8/28 snowblower. I checked on sears and the model number is too old from them to register... and some sites do not carry craftsman models... Please help.

If you can't get the manual for that specific machine from Sears, one choice is to get one for a later machine the same size and hope there aren't too many changes, get one for a machine close to your vintage but has the same mechanical workings as yours, check on Ebay now and then(nothing now.I looked),or check around online for a manual that covers different makes and vintages. If you Google (craftsman snowblower manual)it,there are a number of hits from people looking for old manuals. Once the companies stop supplying them, there isn't much you can do but hope someone's got one in a pile of "stuff" in their garage or stashed in a filing cabinet.
It must get boring preaching to the choir.
